Russia's chief doctor wants to be "honored culture worker of Kakheti"

04.09.2012 (Hvino News). It is the fault of Tbilisi that Georgian wine, brandy and mineral water have not yet been returned to the Russian market, said Gennady Onishchenko, head of Russia's sanitary service Rospotrebnadzor. "Georgian authorities are not interested", Onishchenko said yesterday in interview to Russian radio station Echo Moskvy.

Gennady Onishchenko also stated that he had saved the ancient culture of winemaking in Georgia by barring the export of counterfeit products under the brand name of Georgian wine to Russia. "I can say with certainty that I must become the honored culture worker of Kakheti. I have saved the ancient culture of wine, which is inherent in this region of the current Georgian. Because everything was full of fakes and dishwater, presented as Georgian wines", the head of health department of Russia said.

According to Onishchenko, previously Georgian wine producers exploited Soviet brands. "Those people who came into wine business in Georgia, did not keep the tradition, but just came to snatch a large sum", the head of Rospotrebnadzor said. Onishchenko compared the prohibition of Georgian wine in Russia to "an amputation".
