Zurab Ramazashvili becomes the Burgundy Wine Knight

14.05.2017. (Hvino News) Zurab Ramazashvili, the co-founder of Telavi Wine Cellar – one of Georgia’s leading wine producing companies – was nominated as a member of the French “Brotherhood of Knights of  the Wine-Tasting Cup”.

The brotherhood known as “Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin” initiated the new Knight during a solemn ceremony on May 13 at the ancient castle of Château du Clos de Vougeot in the heart of Burgundy, the famous wine producing province of France.

The members of the brotherhood of wine knights of Burgundy are called “chevaliers du Testevin” because of the organization’s medieval symbol – tâtevin or testevin – the traditional wine-tasting cup, used by tasters and wine-producers. An essential tool for winegrowers since the Middle Ages, the cup is made of solid silver or silver-plated, and has a raised design so that the appearance and colour of the wines can be appreciated.

Mr. Ramazashvili shared his impression of the ceremony as follows: “It is a great honor to become a knight of such a highly-esteemed wine brotherhood, which is almost a century old. The respect of traditions and devoted love to the wine unite the Chevaliers from all over the world. The brotherhood of wine knights of Burgundy is more than a local club in a province of France – it has expanded worldwide, having around 40 branches in the USA only.  I think it could be a great idea to found a similar brotherhood in Georgia, which would bring together the Georgian wine lovers and aficionados from around the globe and thus create a strong lever to boost the promotion of Georgian wine and its ancient traditions.”

The "Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin" is a private club with a limited number of members. According to its statute, the brotherhood “appreciates merit as well as talent, it likes to honour courage, personal endeavour, scientific intelligence, the love of France and fulfillment of human values”.  An applicant must be presented by two members of the Brotherhood who agreed to be the sponsors. “Heads of state, ministers, ambassadors, royalty, Nobel prize-winners or writers, famous military or business leaders, sport champions, singers or actors, all have come or will come one evening or another to the Cistercian cellar to have the moving experience of going through the "Cercles du Vin", - reads the official website of the Burgundy’s brotherhood. The motto of the wine knights is "He is not good, who strives not to be better" (a saying by Saint Bernard, patron of Burgundy).

Since 1934, the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin has been celebrating Burgundy, with its gastronomy and great wines, at Château du Clos de Vougeot, in a spirit of hospitality, generosity and human warmth. Thousands of people from everywhere in the world have participated in the famous chapitres (assemblies) at the castle, “discovering beneath the good humour of Burgundy, under the auspices of cheerfulness and optimism”.
