Georgian wine to be offered through The Wine Society - the world's oldest wine club

29.02.2016 (Hvino News). Georgia’s Schuchmann Wines became the first Georgian wine brand to be sold through Britain's Wine Society, which is the world's oldest wine club, founded in 1874.

According to  Schuchmann's executive director Ekaterine Javakhia, they signed an agreement on the shipment of Schuchmann’s wines on 2 February. She said Georgian Wine Association invited the society’s purchasing director to several vineyards  in 2015, and Schuchmann’s wines were selected.

The Wine Society was established at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 4 August 1874. It was created and still operates as a co-operative with each member owning one share.  After more than 130 years The Society continues to be owned solely by its members (one share each) and trades only with them. The focus, as defined in 1874, continues to be "to make available to members the highest possible quality of wines and services at the best possible prices".

Marseille’s museum honours Georgia’s rich wine history

27.02.2016. A special area promoting all things about Georgian wine has opened in a national museum in France’s south-eastern coastal city of Marseille.

Visitors to the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) can now see a number of traditional items used historically to make Georgian wine at the museum’s permanent new Georgian corner.

The museum generates about 20,000 daily visitors and boasts a permanent collection charting the historical and cultural cross-fertilisation of grapes in the Mediterranean basin.

The Georgian corner, which currently featured Georgia’s wine-making history and traditions, was officially opened yesterday by Georgian and French officials.

At the opening Vice Mayor of Marseille said it was important to represent Georgia in the museum together with the Mediterranean basin culture icons as "the country is an important part of this civilisation”.

Corporation Georgian Wine joins UN Global Compact infinitive

26.02.2016 (Hvino News). Corporation Georgian Wine (CGW) has become the only Georgian wine producer to join in the United Nations' Global Compact infinitive.

The United Nations Global Compact is a United Nations initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their implementation.

"I am pleased to confirm that Corporation Georgian Wine supports the ten principles of the Global Compact on human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption", reads the letter signed by Mikheil Khundadze, CGW's general director.

Among others, these ten principles include:
  • Principle 3: Businesses should uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining;
  • Principle 8: undertake initiatives to promote greater environmental responsibility; and
  • Principle 9: encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
  • Principle 10: Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.
The UN Global Compact is a principle-based framework for businesses, stating ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption. The UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative with 13000 corporate participants and other stakeholders in over 170 countries.

The first Georgian wine company to join Global Compact was Teliani Valley in 2007, but in 2012 it was de-listed "due to failure to communicate progress". In total, 51 Georgian companies and non-profits have joined the UN initiative.

Iago's Chinuri called "the apogee" in Top Hipster Wines list

24.02.2016 (Hvino News). In a recent post Hvino News has wrote about the presence of Georgian wine Iago's Chinuri in the wine list of the prestigious Ritz Hotel in London (read here). We have also found the same wine in the list of "Top 10 Hipster Wines".

In his half-serious article - however published in a professional resource The Drinks Business - Darren Smith describes the hipster wine as follows:
"Admittedly, no one knows the precise meaning of the term ‘hipster’, other than it having something to do with a certain homogeneity of appearance, habit and opinion rendered ironic by their conscious striving to express their individuality. Georgian wines at the Boston Wine Expo 2016

17.02.2016 (Hvino News). At the annual Boston Wine Fair 2016 (on February 13-14) the Georgian wines were represented by just one importer company, Massachusetts-based Georgian Toast.

The importer brought wines produced by Tbilvino, Kakhetian Traditional Winemaking, Jakeli Wines.

This year Georgia had much more modest participation than in 2015, when 10 Georgian companies were represented, and Georgian wine seminars were organized (read more: Georgia to showcase wines at Boston Wine Expo, and Boston Wine Expo: Reaction to qvevri wine).

"Proud to be the only exhibitor to showcase some of the best wines Georgia has to offer", commented the importer representative.

Sakura 2016: Japanese female wine experts award nine Georgian wines

16.02.2016. An international wine competition judged exclusively by Japanese female wine specialists awarded nine Georgian wines with Double Gold, Gold and Silver medals.

Nine Georgian wines were selected among 3,543 varieties from 35 countries at the Sakura Japan Women's Wine Awards after five days of tasting in Japan.

Out of the nine Georgian wines awarded, one received a Double Gold medal, four were awarded Gold medals and four earned Silver medals.

The International Chamber of Commerce: Changes proposed by Government regarding freezing of bank accounts not serious

16.02.2016. ICC Georgia had endorsed Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili during its 11 th Consultative Board meeting; Prime Minister Kvirikashvili had presented to ICC Board Members the headlines of his upcoming block of reforms to encourage private sector development.

ICC Georgia had expressed its confidence that Prime Minister Kvirikashvili was committed about tackling in the shortest terms the major hurdles that are damaging the investment climate in the country and mainly the relation between the Revenue Service and the business community.

ICC Georgia is expressing today its deep concern regarding the proposed draft amending the Tax Code, according to which the freezing of bank accounts without court Order for recognized taxes shall stay in force and the Revenue Service still reserves the right to freeze bank accounts for recognized and also unrecognized/disputable taxes if there is a risk of non-payment of such taxes and only after 48 hours the RS will have to apply to the Court and request confirmation of already frozen accounts.

Washington's Georgetown University hosts Azerbaijani, Georgian and Turkish wine tasting

15.02.2016. On February 10, United States-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC) in cooperation with America-Georgia Business Council and American Turkish Council with support of Embassies of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey hosted a wine tasting event for its members at renowned Georgetown University in Washington.

The event was attended by the member-companies of organizing associations, officials of U.S. government, diplomatic corps, media representatives as well as experts and distributors of wine products in Washington area.

In her welcoming speech, Executive Director of USACC Susan Sadigova greeted the guests and informed them about the purpose of the event. Ms. Sadigova underlined Azerbaijan as a country with rich and old history and culture of winemaking. She also highlighted the growing importance of increasing Azerbaijani exports and the role USACC plays in promoting and bringing Azerbaijani products into U.S. market.

Georgia’s wine giveaway: Politics in a bottle?

13.02.2016. It might seem like the perfect welcoming gift after arriving on a flight and clearing passport control — a  free, 375-milliliter bottle of Georgian dry red wine presented by Georgian authorities to each visiting foreigner.

“No country has ever welcomed me this way!” exclaimed one Facebook user in a post published by the Georgian government. Yet in a country with a long history of backroom deals made between government authorities and business buddies, the promotional campaign raises questions about official propriety.

The gifts’ aim is straightforward — to promote Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions, facilitate exports, “and show the country’s image positively,” explained Nino Skhirtladze, who handles international relations for the Ministry of Economy’s Enterprise Development Agency, which oversees the project.

The wine-giving kicked off in 2012 at former President Mikheil Saakashvili’s personal initiative (read more: President of Georgia proposes Tbilisi airport to open its own vineyardTbilisi's soft power of wine, smiles and tourism; President's initiative turned out unexpected for winemakers), but was abandoned after the opposition Georgian Dream coalition came to power that same year.

Two years later, the Enterprise Development Agency revived the idea. To date, it has held four online tenders to select suppliers for peak tourist seasons. In a country with 200 registered wineries, including 40 exporters, you might expect competition to be stiff. It is not.

Official: Georgia’s wine export up 13%

10.02.2016 (Hvino News). Georgia exported 13 percent more wine in January, compared to the same period last year.

According to the National Wine Agency, Georgia exported wine to 19 countries around the world. 1,521,802 bottles were exported, worth USD 3.62 million.

At the same time, the country exported 562,930 bottles of brandy, which is 104% higher than for the same period of 2015.

The top destination countries in January were Russia – 960,462 bottles, Ukraine – 199,722 bottles, Poland – 114,276 bottles, China – 45,160 bottles and Lithuania – 44,850 bottles.

Export grew notably for Russia - 162%, Poland - 22%, Lithuania - 34%.

Overall income from exports of wine and spirits as of  January 2016 was 6.6 million USD.

Georgian and Armenian wines together under common "Cradle of wine" umbrella title

07.02.2016 (Hvino News). For the first time Georgian and Armenian wines appear together under a common title "Bottles from the cradle of wine".

Two wines from Georgia and one from Armenia are featured in a review published by British newspaper The Guardian, authored by wine expert David Williams.

Georgia and Armenia, two neighboring Christian nations with ancient wine-making traditions, are known for a long-time dispute over priority in being the world's "cradle of wine"  (read, for instance: Armenia and Georgia disagree over slogan "Cradle of Wine".)

This is why it is unusual to see publications which put wines produced in two countries together. However, from a Western European perspective Georgia and Armenia are often seen as countries with similar cultural and historical background.

For his "wines of the week" review David Williams selected Armenian Zorah Karasi Noir (the most expensive one: £22) and two Georgian wines: Iago's Chinuri (£16.65) and Khareba Saperavi (£10). The author is asking: "What kind of wine were they making 5,000 years ago? These wines may not get close, but they do hint at the colourful and unique history of winemaking in this part of the world".

Georgian qvevri wines presented in five cities of France

06.02.2016 (Hvino News) Thanks to recent Georgian wine-tasting events in five cities of France, the connoisseurs of organic wines from  Paris, Orleans, Blois, Angers, Saumur had a chance to sample traditional qvevri wines.

The wines represented in France were  produced by Iago’s Wine, Pheasant’s Tears, Ramaz Nikoladze,  Okro's Wines, Niki Antadze, Natenadze Wine Cellar and Mariam Iosebidze. In Saumur Georgian wine was presented at the natural wine exhibition La Dive Boutteille. La Dive Bouteille is considered the world’s largest annual natural wine exposition. In Angers, Georgian wines were presented in Les Penitentes fair.

Georgia’s Ambassador to France Ekaterine Siradze-Delaunay said such events helped raise awareness of Georgian wine and gain a following among French consumers: "Presenting Georgian wine in France means worldwide recognition. Representatives of lots of countries visit France to taste wine, it is important for us to attend all of these events and promote our  wine. We already see positive consequences, when more an more French people say that Georgia is a homeland of wine."

China creates network of Georgian wine centres

28.01.2016. Dozens of Georgian wine centres will open in China this year, allowing Georgian wine producers to share their products with Chinese consumers.

Today Georgia’s Ministry of Agriculture announced Chinese trade-economic Suolun Group would open 60-80 new Georgian wine centres in China this year.

By opening the centres, the Chinese Group aimed to popularize Georgian wine and promote the country’s rich winemaking culture.

Yesterday Suolun Group opened a Georgian wine house in China’s Zhijiang province, where 55 million people live.

This was the second Georgian wine house opened by the Group in China within the last seven months.

Suolun Group also planned to open a Georgian wine school in Yiwu, eastern China – a city of about 1.2 million people that’s famous for its vibrant market.

Georgian wine centre opens in China's Jiangxi province

19.01.2016. Georgia continues promoting its wine and winemaking culture in China with the opening a new Georgian wine centre. Georgia’s Agriculture Ministry announced the wine centre will be opened in February this year in China’s province of Jiangxi where about 30 million people live.

A Georgian wine centre will cover 4,000 sq.m. territory where will be placed wine-testing and exhibition halls, museum, and Georgian restaurant.

This was not the first Georgian wine cetnre in China. In July 2015 Georgia opened a promotional centre and winemaking house in China’s capital Beijing. At the same time a Georgian wine house was opened in China’s Zhagang province, where 30 varieties of dry, semi-dry and semi-sweet wines were represented.

Later in August three Georgian wine centers opened in China’s Xinjiang province to increase popularity of Georgian wine and raise awareness of the country among Chinese consumers.

Leading Georgian winemakers expecting 10% sales growth in 2016

16.01.2016. Leading Georgian wine companies ended 2015 with a drop in sales of over 20% due to the economic difficulties of their main trade partners. The reduction of the wine industry has shown a 39% decline compared with 2014. Regional economic difficulties are expected to continue in 2016 as well. However, the environment looks set to remain predictable for businesses, making them optimistic about achieving over 10% growth this year.

 “The boom in Georgian wine that was shown in 2014 should not be expected to be repeated in 2016. This year will also be full of challenges. There will be an environment of economic crisis in our main partner countries. The national currencies are expected to continue devaluating in Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Belarus. These are markets which make up over 80% of the total sales of Georgian wine,” Giorgi Margvelashvili, President at Tbilvino JSC, told The Financial.

However, a good trend of this year according to Margvelashvili is that while the overall environment is not ideal, it remains predictable. “Some unexpected, upcoming drops should not be expected. 2016 will be more predictable and accordingly, the wine industry along with our company are meeting the year more prepared and we know what to expect. Predictability is a core factor for business,” said Margvelashvili.

According to the National Wine Agency of Georgia, 36,071,399 bottles (0.75 litres) of wine have been exported from Georgia to 46 countries of the world. Export worth USD 98,102,614.

Was the year of 2015 successful for the company? Are the sales indicators satisfactory?

– The year of 2015 was full of innovations for the company. We have introduced two new varieties of sparkling wines and returned the old wine brands to the Georgian customer. I mean Vartsikhe, Gremi, Very Old, Eniseli and Tbilisi. We introduced these products in October 2015, outlined due plans and we are content with their fulfillment. Naturally, the next year will be more ambitious and full of big plans.

Iago Bitarishvili's Chinuri in wine list of London's legendary Ritz hotel

13.01.2016 (Hvino News). The iconic London's Ritz hotel, which celebrates its 110th anniversary, has recently updated its Le Livre de Vin - or wine list. Now for the first time now includes Georgian wine: 2013 Iago Bitarishvili's Chardakhi Chinuri.

The prestigious wine list has five orange wines, and only two of them will be available by the glass: Iago's Chinuri from Kartli, and Dario Princic Ribolla Gialla from Friuli, Italy.

A 125 ml glass of Iago's Chinuri at Ritz is priced at £14 (about 50 GEL).

The price tag for a bottle of Iago's Chinuri is £65 (230 GEL).

While the Ritz has long been associated with its traditional approach to wine, its move to include orange wines represents a step into the wine avantgarde. "The new list  places a strong emphasis on indigenous varieties, with lesser known wines from regions including Languedoc, Jura, Corsica, Etna, Georgia, Slovakia and Santorini all included," - reads Ritz' release.

NASA to help determine Georgia as birthplace of wine

11.01.2016 (Hvino News). NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration of the United States - is helping Georgia to determine if Georgia is birthplace of wine.

According to David Magradze, the head of the Viticulture Department of the National Wine Agency, the final result would be known in 2016, although it was initially planned for December 2015. The National Agency of Georgian wine said the project will scientifically determine Georgia as the birthplace of wine. The scientific research requires a long-term process until the final results can be published.

“The first result of models sent into the NASA laboratory showed a wine acid remain was discovered in one model, which is consider as mark of European vine. The second parts of models are already sent and research will finish in December. Declaring Georgia as birthplace of wine will be most important phenomena, which will rise in interests in the world about Georgia,” Magradze said.

09.01.2016. The Award Ceremony of the Georgian Wine Second National Competition 2015 reveals the prize-winning wines/chachas and companies in Georgia. The ceremony was organised by Georgian Sommelier Association with the support of the National Wine Agency, Tbilisi City Hall, and Tbilisi City Assembly. It was held on December 23, 2015.

The professional jury revealed the best wines in different categories. Here is the list of winning wines and companies by Georgian Sommelier Association (professional jury).

2015 Georgian wine export down by 39%

07.01.2016 (Hvino News). According to the National Wine Agency, export of Georgian wine decreased by 39% in 2015 compared to the previous year.  Georgia exported more than 36 million bottles of wine to 46 countries, worth more than $98.1 million.

What are the plans of the Georgian winemakers for 2016?

06.01.2016. Georgian winemakers say that the year was quite problematic for them. Besides Russian and Ukrainian markets, problems arose in Belarus and Kazakhstan too.

The ongoing political and economic developments in these countries have already made negative effect on exports of Georgian products and revenues of wine companies.

Giorgi Margvelashvili, founder of Tbilvino, says that the year of 2015 was unfavorable for his company in terms of export sales. Namely, the sales dropped about 20%. Major slowdown was recorded in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, as well as in Kazakhstan. The previous year was very good, when our sales in Russia extremely surged. Therefore, we should not refer to those indicators. Our company will intensify efforts in the Baltic countries, Poland and the USA to remunerate losses in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarus and Kazakh markets. We have found new partners in Germany and Australia. This year our domestic sales rose by 15%.

“We expect the year of 2016 to bring better results. The wineries cannot fully use the harvest that is reaped in Georgia. In 2016, wineries will still have wine reserves and therefore, the field is expected to face problems again”, Margvelashvili noted.

According to the founder of the Berika company Lasha Revazishvili, 2015 was difficult for the company. "In 2015, unlike 2014, our exports dropped sharply. For example, sales in Kazakhstan decreased by almost 50%. A situation is also difficult in Ukraine and Russia. We are trying to compensate for losses at the expense of exports to China and plan to double sales in this country in 2016, "- says the businessman.

Nutsa Abramishvili, the founder of  Schuchmann Wines, notes that in early 2015 the company chose a strategy to maximize the diversification of export markets- its export has fallen by only 15%, which is a very good indicator.

Georgia’s winemaking business suffers a blow in 2015

03.01.2016. What is the opinion of Georgian winemakers on the 2015 results? The year was quite problematic, they said. Besides Russian and Ukrainian markets, problems arose in Belarus and Kazakhstan, too. The ongoing political and economic developments in these countries have already made negative effect on exports of Georgian products and revenues of winemaking companies.

Gia Gamtkitsulashvili, one of the founders of Twins Wine House, evaluated the year of 2016 in an interview: “Our company has been operating in the Georgian wine market for 15 years. We were the first who moved pitcher wine to bottles in 2005 and we prepared 5000 bottles of Kakhetian wine from the Napareuli micro zone grapes. Since then our company has expanded the business.The current year was especially important for our company, because we penetrated new wine markets, namely, China and the USA. Moreover, the company exports wines to seven countries such as Japan, China, Russia, Germany, Great Britain, the USA and Lithuania,” Gia Gamtkitsulashvili added.

"This year we have processed such grape varieties as Qisi, Khikhvi, Cabernet, Kakhetian Green. In 2016 we will introduce these wines to the Georgian market. We will also export our wines to Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine and Poland in 2016. 1200 GEL in a bottle of wine: John Wurdeman charity auction raises 20 000 GEL

30.12.2015. On December 27, in an informal setting in Vino Underground  Map , the natural wine manufacturers and enthusiasts conducted auction in support of John Wurdeman and sold rare Georgian natural wines from private collections [read more here].  Unique wines from almost all wine regions of Georgia - Kakheti, Kartli, Imereti, Guria, Samegrelo and even Meskheti (wines from there are not available now in Georgia) were represented in the auction. These were, for example, Tsitska-Tsolikouri 2010 and Tsolikouri 2013 from Nicoladze Wine Cellar, Iago's Wine 2003, Naotari’s Kisi 2012, Our Wine’s Rkatsiteli Tsarapi 2006, Amber-coloured Chkhaveri 2010 by Iberieli, Saperavi 2012 by Kakha Berishvili and others.

56 bottles of wine sold in total (23 retail, and 33 in lots) and the sales amounted to 18 020 GEL. Niki Antadze’s Rkatsiteli 2010 was sold at 1200 GEL that was the most expensive wine sold in the auction. Iago’s Chinuri and Jakeli Organic Vines and Wine’s Saperavi Khashmi were sold at 1010 GEL. Particularly interesting was activity of women in the auction, who did not let Mandili’s (Marina Kurtanidze, Tea Melanashvili) Mtsvane to anyone and bought this wine at 850 GEL.

The most expensive among the wines grouped in lots was a lot consisted of Saperavi 2013 by Kakha Berishvili, Iberieli’s (Zurab Topuridze) Chkhaveri 2009, Coupage of Jani and Skhiltaubani and Mtsvane by Okro Wines.
