Winery Khareba gets gold award at Concours Mondial de Bruxelles

31.05.2016 (Hvino News). Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is one of the most prestigious wine competitions of the world. Concours Mondial de Bruxelles is an international wine competition which has taken place annually since its inception in 1994. The competition’s name is often shortened to Concours Mondial, particularly since it is now held in various European countries other than Belgium.

The company Winery Khareba have been successfully participating in the competition for several years.

This year on Mondial de Bruxelles only one Georgian wine company Winery Khareba got the gold medal. Chateau Lipartiani 2012 (dry white wine) by Winery Khareba is the winner wine at Concours Mondial Bruxelles 2016.

The very first Concours Mondial was in fact held in the historic city of Bruges, not in Brussels as might be expected given the competition's title. It was organized by Louis Havaux, founder of the Belgian publication Revue Belge des Vins, and attracted more than 850 entries from 29 countries. A self-styled 'World Wine Championship', the Concours Mondial now assesses almost 7000 wines from around the globe each year, and since 1999 has been complemented by the Brussels Spirits Awards.

Book review: The intoxicating war between science and tradition

Review: Mark A. Matthews, ‘Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing,’ and Alice Feiring, ‘For the Love of Wine’

    by Jenna Lifhits

22.05.2016. What makes a good winemaker? Is it a viticulturist’s arsenal of facts and scientific techniques combined with access to the best fruit? Or is it the villager’s traditional knowledge of picking, pressing, fermenting, and bottling his grapes? It is this concern, which strikingly mirrors a conflict in politics, that divides the wine world. Two new books capture the fractured condition of 21st century winemaking: speaking for the scientific or Enlightenment left is Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing by viticulturist Mark A. Matthews; speaking for the romantic, traditionalist right, there is For the Love of Wine by writer Alice Feiring [read also here: Book Review: "For the Love of Wine" by Alice Feiring].

In Terroir and Other Myths of Winegrowing, Matthews sets out to debunk various wine “myths” that he argues have taken root because of blind belief in tradition and authority, both of which impede “potential progress.” After tracing the historical origins of these “myths” and attempting to disprove them scientifically, Matthews concludes that they are a bunch of “bullshit” because they have little grounding in science.

Georgia wins case to trademark its wine in China

18.05.2016. Georgia is promoting and protecting the name and quality of its national alcoholic beverages from misuse and imitation in China.

Today Georgia’s Ministry of Economy announced Georgian wine and other alcoholic beverages had been trademarked and now China was ready to take action to protect the name of origin and geographical indications of Georgian alcoholic drinks.

This meant China would only import Georgia-made products and reject any illegitimate goods that claimed to be made in Georgia but weren’t.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) said geographical indications can be viewed as a subset of trademarks. WTO defined it as "indications which identify a good as originating in the territory of a [WTO] member, or a region or locality in that territory, where a given quality, reputation or other characteristic of the good is essentially attributable to its geographic origin.”

In the near future China will recognise the geographical indications of several Georgian wines including Khvanchkara, Tsinandali and Kindzmarauli as well as Georgian chacha, a strong spirit similar to vodka or brandy which some people refer to as vine vodka, grape vodka, Georgian vodka or Georgian grappa.

"Food & Wine": How to get in on the Georgian wine revival

    by Carson Demmond

17.05.2016. They’ve been making delicious wine in Georgia (the country) for 8,000 years, but only now are those bottles readily available to purchase in the United States. Here’s what you need to know.

Ten years ago, Georgian wine might have earned a casual mention in conversations about Eastern European cuisine. Now, thanks to a handful of importers and well-traveled sommeliers, it’s at the forefront. Not only is Georgia home to one of the most generous of hospitality traditions – a wine-centric feast known as the supra – it also boasts a winemaking history that goes back a whopping 8,000 years. As early as the Bronze Age there, grape juice was being fermented in beeswax-lined clay vessels called qvevri buried in the ground, and fascinatingly, that’s still how much of the country’s wine is being made today.

Reds made in qvevri aren’t that dramatically different from the oak-aged wines we know. Whites, on the other hand, emerge from the vessels deeply colored (some say ‘orange’, some say ‘amber’), more savory-umami than fruit-forward, often with the tannins to match. At the table, these wines are treated much more like food than elevated beverage; on the palate, they’re like windows to the flavors of the ancient past.

If you want to recreate a true Georgian supra at home, be sure to appoint a Tamada, or toastmaster. Tradition dictates that after each toast, the party should empty their glasses, only to be refilled and repeated many times over. If excessive consumption is not your thing, just one of the following bottles should do the trick.

    2013 Lagvinari Krakhuna ($35)
Eko Glonti, a former geologist, makes this wine from Krakhuna grapes in the West Georgian region of Imereti. It tastes more like it sounds than its golden color would suggest; Krakhuna translates to ‘crispy’ in the local dialect.

The festival kicked off with the traditional opening of a clay wine vessel buried in the ground, known in Georgian as a qvevri. Guests also had an opportunity to win barrels full of the best Saperavi wine by taking part in a lottery. Throughout the afternoon visitors were also able to enjoy barbequed meat (mtsvadi) with their wine.

Georgia on the Vine: The world's oldest wine culture is having its moment in the sun

    by Alison Spiegel

13.05.2016. If you think jug wine is a laughing matter, the joke's about to be on you. It's one of the things that sets the wine from Georgia (the country, not the state) apart: Much of it is fermented in clay jugs—but this isn't the handle of cheap Chianti you'll find at the corner liquor store. People are starting to catch on to the region's enchanting wines: Take a good look around, and you'll find more restaurants and wineshops selling the stuff. And you'll hear a growing buzz among natural wine enthusiasts who just might feel like they've struck something like, er, gold.

If you've seen orange-tinted vino at your wine bar, chances are you may have already sipped Georgian wine without even realizing it. Though not all wine from Georgia has that amber color, its hue is a tip-off that it may be from the region. Georgian wine is also an OG of the natural wine craze, where nothing is added and nothing is taken away. It's a thing right now, but Georgia's been doing it that way for centuries.

Georgian wine is still in the process of being discovered: "Even the people who know a lot about it don't know a lot about it," Alex Alan, wine director and partner at recently opened Freek's Mill in Brooklyn, says.

Longtime natural wine champion Alice Feiring is trying to change that, having just published For the Love of Wine: My Odyssey Through the World's Most Ancient Wine Cultures. The book describes what makes Georgian wine special and how this age-old tradition is putting new roots in today's wine world.

Giorgi Samanishvili: Georgian wine exports grow in all directions

12.05.2016. The  National Wine Agency has published the statistics proving the wine exports has increased in the January to April period.

In his interview with the Business Morning Giorgi Samanishvili, the head of National Wine Agency of Georgia, overviews exports and domestic markets.

–Mr. Giorgi, what steps has the national wine agency taken to reach growing indicators on many exports markets?

–The exports have grown by 84% compared to 2015. The ratio of Russia accounts for 51%, the same volume of 2015.

This signifies the Russia’s ratio has not increased. The current dynamics shows that the exports have increased in all directions. The growth was especially important in the Russian direction, because the situation was critical at the beginning of 2015. The situation in the regions has stabilized and business relations were revised between Georgian exporters and Russian importers.

The exports volume has increased at the expense of reduced prices. Total revenues have increased and all directions record positive tendencies.

–Is the diversification policy rectilinear and do you consider the diversification policy to be satisfactory?
